My roommate and I decided we were going to have cupcakes at our birthday party. There are a couple boutique stores around us that just sell cupcakes as well as some bakeries. But which cupcakes do we want?

We needed to do a cupcake experiment! A delicious experiment!

Day One

Sweet Mandy B’s (They do not appear to have their own site)

The bakery is really cute but who cares, we did not come to eat your adorable walls! There were 2 kids climbing the display cases while we were in line. They obviously do not appreciate science and their parents do not appreciate the wholeness of their children’s bones. After deciding the children would not be delicious, not even with frosting we ordered 1 of each flavor of cupcake. Chocolate, vanilla, pumpkin and orange. And sprinkles!

They were overall delicious. The frosting was sweet and the cake was moist and yummy. The flavors were a little plain but they’re not a fancy trendy type bakery.

Next was Swirlz Cupcakes.

Swirlz is a cute little boutique that only sells cupcakes. They have rotating flavors. We got vanilla pomegranate, chocolate peanut butter, and a surprise flavor that ended up being pumpkin. Maybe pumpkin would have been a surprise in the middle of July but not in October. I bought a carrot cake cupcake for my boy. Dating a scientist has it’s benefits.

I could see the cupcake box shaking in my roommate’s hands and decided we better try the Swirlz cupcakes right away before she exploded. We sat at their cute sidewalk table and made a mess. The “swirl” of frosting on top really does not want to come apart. The frosting was very disappointing on the pomegranate and pumpkin. It tastes like flavored Cool Whip. The chocolate peanut butter was better. Overall we were not impressed especially since these are the most expensive cupcakes of the contenders at $3 each. My boy said the frosting was the same on the carrot cake cupcake. Carrot cake without cream cheese frosting? That’s just wrong.

According to their site, most of the cupcakes are sugar free. The pomegranate cupcake is gluten free. I don’t even know what gluten is so I don’t really care. Hint:sugar makes things taste good.

Day Two

Southport Grocery and Cafe was first on our list for day two. I already had high hopes for them since they make a wonderful cupcake pancake. They only have chocolate and vanilla cupcakes. The vanilla actually tasted a little like lemon cake. It was very good. The chocolate cake wasn’t as good but the frosting was good.

2nd in line was House of Fine Chocolates. They have baked goods, candies and you can order fancy things like wedding cakes from them. I think they rotate flavors as well. We got red velvet and vanilla. Each cupcake was pretty and decorated but the fun stopped there. The vanilla frosting wasn’t very good and the red velvet cake was dry. The frosting on the red velvet was pretty good. Overall it was disappointing and I needed a hug afterward.
We wanted to go to Cupcakes but they’re closed on Sundays. Disqualified! My roommate said that she had been there before and the cupcakes were interesting flavors but not that awesome. Also they are $3 each.

So through the grueling scientific taste testing process we determined Sweet Mandy B’s to be the winner! Southport Grocery’s vanilla would come in 2nd but there is no 2nd place in science.

You too can witness the magic but attending our party which will feature wonderful Sweet Mandy B’s cupcakes!
