I wanted to make a lamb shaped cake for Easter but I couldn’t find a lamb shaped cake pan. One store said they were sold out, one store clerk stared at me blankly as I tried to explain the concept of a pan shaped like a lamb. I didn’t even try to communicate with anyone at the 3rd store.

So I decided I could use the round cake pans already in my apartment and make a Communion cake! In my parent’s church the communion wafer is a round little thing with a cross on it. Looks like these little guys. Some churches do the freeform thing and just tear off a piece of bread. That would’ve been much harder to duplicate in cake form. So yay for preformed body of Christs.

The cake itself is just white cake, the frosting a delicious white chocolate and the blood of Christ is raspberry. The lamb was going to be bloody, too. I’m happy I thought of another way to mock my family’s religious holiday. Now that my big brother is a Born Again, I’m sure religious holiday will be much more fun (for me to ruin).

I started with 2 plain cakes.

I sliced the top edge off one cake to make it flat. I cut a small layer out of the middle so the blood would have somewhere to go. I was using the raspberry sauce that came with the cake package and some more raspberry jam of my own to make it extra stigmata-y.

For some reason I forgot to take a picture of the bottom layer after I put the jam on it.

I added the 2nd layer and frosted the cake. I’m not terribly domestic but I do watch Good Eats so I know to frost the sides of a cake, you put the frosting on top and then spread it to the sides. I did a pretty good job. It was a lot harder making the top flat. I don’t know to do do that so I did best I could with a knife and drew a cross in the middle.

I had a lot of extra frosting because I think the package mix expected me to decorate the cake or something. So now I’m all wired of white chocolate frosting. And I probably have salmonella from licking the batter.
Yay Zombie Jesus Day!

I seem to remember you trying to explain to me that *everyone* did lamb-shaped cakes for Easter and could not understand the fact that I had never heard of it before.

I think this is a South-side Chicago thing pretty exclusively.
